“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.”
1 Corinthians 1:27-29
The story of David and Goliath is one that almost everyone is familiar with because of its relatability. We all have faced bullies, seemingly insurmountable obstacles, intimidating situations and scary challenges. We’ve also been in many situations that seemed hopeless, and yet at the last minute God miraculously rescued the day. So the story of David and Goliath is one that resonates with the human condition and the everyday experiences of life.
But the story of David and Goliath is much more than an inspirational motif or reminder that things will generally work themselves out. We must remember the context, and that context is that this story is in the bible, which is God’s revelation of His glory and plan to save His people. Therefore the story is very intentionally crafted, and like all stories of the Old Testament — it is ultimately a picture of Christ.
One of the most amazing proofs that the bible is a supernatural message is that this message was compiled over a period of about 1,500 years by dozens of authors from different times and places — and yet the message is completely consistent. If you have ever read the bible cover to cover, you have no sense that you’re traveling through so much time, and the Narrator is one person with a consistent, uninterrupted story.
That story ultimately leads us to Jesus in the New Testament and His ministry, death and resurrection.
