The Bread of Life

Being Eastern European, I grew up on bread. In fact one of my earliest memories is going with my grandma down to the local bakery and getting freshly made bread. Being only about 4 years old, the distance seemed like a real sojourn, but the reward was well worth it because there was nothing like warm, fluffy, fresh made bread — and grandma always gave me a piece on the way home.
Today I have learned to make my own bread, and although I don’t consider myself any sort of artisan, it is uniquely satisfying to have bread that is made at home and with simple ingredients. Bread is what feeds us and is the foundation of food, much like water is the foundation of life. Bread is even used as a metaphor to refer to supporting a family, as in “the breadwinner” of the house. We say that our livelihood is our “bread and butter” and we “break bread” with those we associate intimately to.
